Tips on traveling with kids
Traveling – whether by car, plane, or boat – can take a toll on your physical, psychological, and emotional self especially when traveling long distances. Now, what more if you will be traveling with children? Imagine the inconveniences, hassles, and accidents that may happen if you bring along infants, toddlers, or small children with you on your journey that is taxing enough as it is.
Actually, children want to enjoy their traveling as much as you. What child wouldn’t be thrilled with the prospect of going to some new and exciting far off place? While accidents (especially with children around) are expected and could not be 100% avoided, there are things that you can do to be ready for them when they do happen. Here are some tips so that you can prepare yourself for accidents and to also prevent them from occurring and escalating.
As a rule, safety should be the number one priority when traveling with children. It cannot be stressed enough how important this is. Use the law on child car seats as a guide on how to properly transport a child of any age in a car. Any child under 3 years of age is required by law to be in a child car seat. This car seat must be placed in the rear of the car and must be faced towards the back of the car. There are different kinds of car seats for children up to 12 years of age available in the market so pick one that correctly fits your child. Children over 12 years of age must wear a seatbelt when in the car at all times and the same seatbelt rule is applied when traveling by plane. Buckle a child’s airplane seatbelt first before you buckle yours.
Small children should have some form of child restraint system. Use a child restraint system especially with toddlers who love to poke their curious noses into things and wander around. As much as you love and value your child, it is very easy to lose them while traveling. With all the luggage, documents, and things-to-do that you have to mind, keeping an eye on a hyperactive child could be very difficult. A child restraint system can help you tremendously especially when you have to get some much needed rest.
Make a list of things to bring and make sure that it contains all the essentials. Expect spillages, throw-ups, and diaper accidents to happen so pack a lot of baby wipes, towels, and bags with you. Does your child need special medicine? Pack those along with the prescription. As a lot of travelers know by now, airports impose restrictions on all forms of fluid so pack only the allowed quantity of baby formula in your hand carry.
Children get bored and become restless very easily so bring along some toys with you. Choose these toys wisely however, as they could become particularly dangerous objects while traveling. Choose toys that do not break easily, are not sharp, and do not have many removable parts. It is wise to just bring along your child’s favorite toy that could keep him or her entertained for hours on end.
