You don't think it's much, but when you're on the island you can't imagine plunging into that freezing water in the middle of the night on a makeshift raft just hoping the current takes you where you want to go. Alcatraz is formidable and ominous at the least. Though they deserved their punishment I can also see why so many escape attempts were made. A must see excursion for those in the San Francisco area.
